She crept along the wire carefully; knife in teeth, darkly flamboyant clothes, she was the spitting image of a classical pirate out of one of Lucca’s picture books. And she would have liked it that way, if she hadn’t banished the image from her mind to avoid choking up. Burglary was hard work, after all, and she couldn’t afford to get caught.
Not that it was likely. The few people in sight were specks of movement on the distant ground. On the far balcony, there wasn’t a soul. All in all, there weren’t any guards either; instead of easing her worries, this only served to make her more paranoid.
Concentrate! In, out, and out’a here, she reminded herself. Creeping over the darkened terrace, she made her way into the Chambers of the Dragon. Dragons, Dragon… The room was dimly lit by a blue aura, and she grinned nervously. This had better be worth it.
It was there on the desk – the Frozen Flame. The Dragons had come to her, of all people, a lowly thief; they had promised her her dreams. All she had to do...
Trapped in the reflection of the sphere, she paused in awe. It shimmered, and she beheld a vision – a young man, herself, a dream... a world apart... Beautiful things. Her dreams.
She shook her head clear. All she had to do was get out of here alive. Shivering as she did, she gathered the orb into her bag, and the light vanished. Staying a moment to orient herself, she paled at a sudden presence.
"So it’s true."
He came out of the dark – a four-legged hunter in the guise of a man. She barely caught a glimpse of him before oblivion took her, and Kid was no more.
They sent you to me...? They sent you... for me?
When she awoke, she was bound to him. The
last fleeting memory before she served Lynx so diligently, was the promise
of a dragon, and the shifting of dimensions.
The End
