Waiting

Cecil said Kain was good, and so she believed despite everything. But he was always so far away, in his own mind and the past. He never spoke to her, never saw her; she wondered if he ignored her, and if he were good if that made her evil.

Because he avoided her, and she knew he did. He talked to the others, even Rosa in a pious way, but to her he never said a word. She was never so unsure, but Cecil said he was good. So she watched him, waited for this goodness to show.

When he sat all alone, she sat with him. He’d sit through the night, and she’d curl up next to him to sleep. She’d walk next to him, always watching as his gaze passed her over. She fought beside him, guarding his back and sparing Cecil the need.

The last night, in the depths of the Moon, when he sat all alone, she sat with him. And when he turned his head at last, she smiled.

"Hi. I’m Rydia."
